Have been a flight simmer for some time and am also doing my PPL. Am Head of Aviation Studies at Snowy Mountains Grammar School in Jindabyne NSW where I have the luxury of teaching Aviation Studies from BAK through to CPL (only theory). We are fortunate to have a strong industry/school association with Brindabella Airlines (YSCB) who conduct our flying component. We offer the chance for students Yr.9+ to obtain a CPL by the time they complete Yr.12 - also offer a CPL preparation course (enough looking for cheap advertising - apologies but hard not to be entusiatstic about our program)
Have a rather sophistacted simulator( to be more correct a synthetic trainer) incoporating a number of GoFlight controls and 3 screens (using matorx technology - a must for abnitio/attitude flying). We use this in our course and find it a great procedural trainer - will post a photograph when I found out how to. |

Hey Phil, welcome mate. I'm sure you'll find lots of support and aviation info here.
Sounds like you have a very interesting work life? I'm sure with your aviation interests you're loving the PPL real-life training! |

Hi Phil,
Welcome to AusFlightSim. That CPL prep course sounds just fantastic. I wish I had that kind of opportunity when I was in high school.
Definitely share the pics of your trainer, would love to see those. _________________ Cheers, Adrian

Hi PhilR and welcome to AFS
I'm interested to know how you can teach students up to a CPL level without a CPL + Grade 1 Instructors license even if it is only theory?
Nice to meet you by the way, I look forward to seeing the photos.
Kind Regards,
Gavin Gillett

Thanks for the welcome, most appreciated
To Gavin:
Relevant question and I hope answer below provides some insight:
In an ideal world teaching CPL theory would be easier having a CPL qualification. However it is achievable without having one bearing the following in mind:
• A number of theory courses up to CPL are designed for both home and training school delivery (students referring to their instructors for advice where needed with the home option)
• At the risk of being egotistical, at SMGS we have developed skills to deliver both internal and external courses – we pride ourselves in being able to take a body of knowledge (and most importantly for aviation) provide competency based courses grounded in ‘first principle’ learning
• While we conduct an extensive internal assessment program, we are basically preparing students for the relevant FTO and CASA exams - all testing (both theory and flying training) is conducted by our FTO Brindabella Flying Training (a subsidiary of Brindabella Airlines operating out of Canberra)
• We run all our course materials by the BFT instructors before providing them to students
• We have also established an excellent working relationship with our FTO where our students will often take questions to their instructors and we constantly seek to clarify any issues that may surface
• The program is also built around the premise that our FTO is the key body when it comes to expertise and that at SMGS we provide the opportunity in the form of a structured and educationally sound program for students to realise their dreams |
