Hi All,
Just wanted to ask a few questions in regards to getting a decent rig arranged for FSX (and IL2 1946 + Lock On). My current PC itself is reasonably up to date (Intel Dual Core 6700, Nvidia 8800GT 768Mb, Asus P5-N32-E, WD 500 Gb HDD, 4Gb RAM (Vista 64), Samsung 226BW 22" LCD), but what I'm wondering is what else to get to get a decent set-up?
So here goes:
Hardware
What flight controllers would you recommend (including rudder pedals)?
How many LCD screens would you recommend and what is needed to run them all? (and what size screens)
What other add-on hardware would you suggest?
Is there a 'cockpit' set-up available anyway in Australia or is it best set up on a desk?
Software
What version of FSX? (I assume deluxe is best?)
What additional software/add-ons do you have or would you recommend? (weather, scenery, radio etc)
Thanks for your time |

Hi there funny name man.
Your system is good and should run those flightsims well.
The best controllers at the moment are the Saitek X52 Pro's with the Saitek Pro rudder Pedals' I would also suggest the Saitek Yoke system they have just released.
I run 3 x 22" Veiwsonics and all that's required is a good GFX card combined with the Matrox triple head 2 go.
Also pick up Track IR4 Pro for head tracking goodness. (No more POV Hat)
There are allot of cockpit designers in Australia and they can make what you need to order. Try Simpits as well for more information.
Kind Regards,

Thanks Gavin. Yes the name is a little funny, it's my name in other game types I play and to keep it easy to track my registrations for mutliple forums I've kept it the same - it's not exactly appropriate for flight simming but anyway!
Your info is helpful, so it looks like it's time to spend some $$$!!! Just wondering what software add-ons are useful for FSX? I see there are a number of terrian add-ons, real life weather, traffic etc etc. |

| Cheers for the info - now it's time to spend some $. I'll probably start with the Saitek pro/FSX bundle at the FlightSim Store and go from there. |

Good start.
I would highly suggest Track IR4 Pro and the Saitek rudder pedals too.
That will bring the realism up to "beyond fun" levels.

| Yes, the bundle has the rudder pedals included. Does the IR4Pro work with multiple screens? |

Yes it works better even. I use 3 x 22" viewsonics with triple head 2 go digital.
Amazing results.
Here it is setup at the OZ FlightSim Expo on the Gold Coast last year.

| Wow! Looks great! Sorry to keep asking questions, but I assume it's good to have all 3 screens the same size and type? |

It helps yeah.
What happens is your stretching your screen resolution across all three monitors and considering those three monitors as one. Having one in there an odd size would throw out the image. However if you have two different sized monitors on hand and you don't want to spend $900 getting three new ones. You could invest in a GFX card that supports twin DVI ports and run a duel monitor setup.
Down sides to this would be the center of the duel screens would be in the middle of the bezel. Unless of course you use the second monitor to run some other image like your GPS or moving Map. Secondly for the GFX card to produce 2 images requires more power and degrades performance of your GPU. You may notice a drop in FPS and as we know. FSX needs every last FPS we can muster.
Hope this help and I don't mind the questions at all.
Kind Regards,

Well it's arrived safe and sound today - FSX deluxe + Saitek 52Pro + Saitek Rudder Pedals - let the fun begin!
Just some more questions - do I need to update my FSX with SP1 and/or SP2? |

Hello Nosf3ra2 !
I think you should install SP1 ,SP2 or ACC Pack(which contains SP2 ).
But the SP2 makes most of the add-ons(which already worked in FS9)not longer working. So,
after installing SP2 only"real"FSX add-ons are working properly.

Hi there
Yep what Scott said is 100% correct, SP1 and SP2 will help to improve performance and add DX10 preview support. Add-on aircraft designed, built or purchased before SP1 or SP2 may not work properly and require a simple patch that in most cases you can download from the manufacturer of that add-on.
Kind Regards,
